Whew! You’re halfway into the first year of this parenting gig, and guess what? You’re passing with flying colors. Chances are, your sweet little newborn has morphed into an active, alert and engaged baby with a personality that can melt the hardest of hearts. Which means your toolkit is morphing as well – accommodating the needs of a more mobile, less easily-distracted tot. Bring on the reinforcements!

It’s feeding time! By now, you’ve probably tackled the task of introducing solids to your baby, so this is the perfect time to establish a regular dinner table routine with baby’s first high chair.

JEWELRY (big surprise here) 

For the new mom, this watch by Benbini is well, amazing.  It allows you to track baby’s schedule and even includes a “left-right” switch for nursing moms.  This did not make sense to me 3 years ago, but all I can say is I wish I thought of it first.

If you are in Portland, Beam and Anchor is an amazing store that you as a guy will be stoked to be in, especially if you are into refurbished furniture and other cool “dude” stuff (while you are there, you should probably grab yourself something – you deserve it, this is hard work).  However, they also carry tons of jewelry that my wife is “obsessed” with (see what I did there).  Not heading to Portland anytime soon?  Not to worry, you can check out their jewelry selection through one of their resident makers and collaborators, Spartan.  *In all honesty, my wife pretty much loves everything in this store; it’s a win-win.

FURNITURE

A little something nice for the house that she wants, but would probably not buy for herself.

TIME

And always remember, do not get her something that you think she needs (the alarm clock went over really well one year) or something that deep down you really want, ever (save that trick for her birthday).  You can never go wrong with the gift of time, (to herself, not from me of course, but maybe from the kids) especially if that time involves a facial and massage.

Congrats, Mamas! You’ve survived the fourth trimester of postpartum pains and raging hormones and frozen casseroles. In my book, here’s where we start to have some fun, yes? (Hint: Speaking of fun, tune into the very end of this post for an amazing giveaway I just know you’ll enjoy!)

For me, the three-month mark was an incredible milestone. My daughter was interacting more (while my breasts were leaking less!) – smiling and cooing and charming the pants off her father and me. It also meant, however, that she was suddenly so mobile, rolling and lifting and reaching and – eventually at six months – crawling. Eek!

Suddenly my essential toolkit just wasn’t going to cut it. I needed reinforcements – and fast. As a minimalist, I often found that shopping for a baby was, surprisingly, one of the less enjoyable experiences of my pregnancy. There were just so many options and seemingly endless decision-making for products I knew nothing about. How would I know which items my baby would prefer; which products I would prefer?

The truth is, I wouldn’t. Until my baby arrived, I could only read reviews, listen to advice and heed the wisdom of those before me. And then, once my sweet newborn bundle was in my arms, I could do little more than trust that I had fastened a nest she could be comforted in. Yet now that my sweet newborn bundle is a bright-eyed six-month-old, I’m still figuring out what her needs (and mine) might be as she grows and changes throughout the various stages of baby-dom. Such is the nature of parenthood, right?

Still, there are a few necessities that I found incredibly helpful during those early days of postpartum adjustments – and beyond. Below, I’ve listed what I like to call the Essential Toolkit For First-Time Mothers: The Postpartum Edition. You’ll find a slew of items that kept me afloat before, during and shortly after the transition from woman to mother. Each product will include a few different options, because as we all know, every mama is different! (Note: Any asterisk* is a product or brand I use – and love! – in my own home.)

Go on; stock up on these necessities before you welcome that bundle of joy, and rest easy knowing you’re going to be an amazing mother – whatever the size, shape or color your nest might be.

 

1. Nursing Balm

If you are not yet familiar with momma and lifestyle blogger James of Bleubird Vintage, you are in for a treat!  We interviewed James for totStuff shortly before baby Sailor was born.  Here she shares insights on how they successfully blended their family, what she did differently to prepare for baby number four, and her number one piece of parenting advice.

You are preparing for baby number four (a boy);  what, if anything, is different this time around?

This time around I am much more prepared since I just had a baby in the house. When I was preparing for birdie (now two) my youngest was almost eight years old and so I basically had to start over preparing myself and our home for a new baby. This time it was much easier, we had so much already and only needed to add a few things to make room for another child.

Do you have any tips for introducing a new babe to his/her siblings, especially when there is a toddler involved?

The best way that I have found to introduce the new baby to the family is to make them a part of the pregnancy from the start. We constantly talk about the baby as if he is already here. The kids are also involved in picking things out for baby and helping prepare, put together and things for him. We talk with birdie every day about her new baby brother and how she is going to be a big sister soon. She knows that baby is coming and that this is baby’s crib or baby’s stroller. When I was around three months I bought her a baby doll and we practiced holding the baby, being gentle with the baby and taking care of baby. She is now very sweet with babies and I think it will make the transition much easier.

You and Aubrey have managed to harmoniously blend your gorgeous family, how did you navigate that process?

We really took our time doing so. When Aubrey and I started dating it was very important to me that we take things slow and that first and foremost he become a trustworthy friend to my children above all else. Over time the relationship between him and my children grew stronger and in turn mine and his relationship grew stronger as well. He also was introduced to my children’s father and it was important to me that they form a relationship as well since I am very close with my ex-husband and his family. We are all good friends which makes co-raising children and blending families so much easier.

We imagine you are often asked for parenting advice, any essential insights you are willing to share with our readers?

My biggest advice would be to listen to your kids. To make it safe for them to come to you with anything, any problem and any thoughts no matter what ‘it’ is or how bad that they think ‘it’ may be. They should be able to, and want to, tell you anything and everything under the sun, good or bad, happy or sad, and you should be there, ready to listen, calmly and openly and to let them know that whatever it is big or small, it’s okay.

My daughter Maggie will be 3 years old this coming March. I love watching her grow into such a vivacious and funny little girl and I’m lucky that I’m able to work from home so that I can participate in her colorful life, especially during the holiday season. If Maggie had her way, every day would include as much Wonder Pets, craft time, yogurt and berries as she could handle before hugging our dog goodnight. She is a joy and we have so much fun together. Here are the things we are “into” right now:

1.) Animals:

Sometimes we think we live with two dogs, instead of a dog and a toddler. Maggie loves animals, especially puppies, and often runs around barking and sniffing. In fact, she named our “Elf on the Shelf” Ruff Ruff and the only gift she asked Santa for was a stuffed puppy. It doesn’t matter if it’s squishy, wiggly, wooden or plastic; animals are always at Maggie’s side and the stars of her everyday adventures.

2.) Exploring Food and Making Eating Fun:

We are pretty lucky to have a toddler who loves broccoli, Greek yogurt, blueberries, rice, fish and chicken…but we are still trying to encourage her to try at least a bite of everything we serve her at mealtime, whether it’s spaghetti and meatballs, or a turkey and cheese sandwich. Sometimes it’s a battle royale to get her to taste something she isn’t familiar with. As luck would have it, one night my husband brought home Thai takeout that included a few sets of chopsticks. We gave her some basic instructions and let her have at it, and instead of whining and inspecting all the new food, she dove right in so she could use her new sticks! Now, if we’re having a hard time introducing food, we give her a new utensil to eat it with, or skewer it on a stick and suddenly food becomes less of a fight and a lot more fun.

3.) Sharing Living and Play Spaces:

We live in a 3-story townhome in North Bend, with the third bedroom on the entrance level and the other bedrooms on the top level, leaving our main living area in the middle to act as our adult living room and playroom for Maggie. Sharing our spaces can be difficult at times, but I try to keep things as clean and organized as possible, and when I can, shop for toys that are as beautiful to look at as they are exciting to play with. Cubbies and baskets are key to my sanity, and we’re okay with making our décor as colorful and modern as her space is to distract from the double duty, and don’t mind staring at a stuffed giraffe over a glass of Cabernet.

4.) Tea Parties:

Maggie LOVES a good tea party. She loves being fancy, setting the table with her tea set and faux flowers, and she’s happy to party with just Mom and some stuffed animals. Sometimes we have a tea party in our jammies, and sometimes we dress up. Hot cocoa is perfect “tea” for this time of year, especially when paired with treats from our local bakery.

5.) Arts and Crafts:

Being a crafter by trade, I have exposed Maggie to all kinds of creative tools and products. By the time she was 10 months old, she was pulling sheets of letter stickers out of my craft boxes with shrieks of delight. Some of our favorite craft activities are coloring with markers, playing with sticker books, making simple projects from craft kits, and practicing cutting with craft scissors. When we can combine all of these into one activity, it’s a surefire winner.

6.) Elf on the Shelf:

I have to say, I was really excited that Maggie is old enough now that we can finally participate in the new tradition of the “Elf on the Shelf.” As mentioned before, Maggie chose the name “Ruff Ruff,” and every night Ruff Ruff reports to Santa about how Maggie has behaved during the day, and then he gets into all kinds of shenanigans. I use Pinterest to look up ideas that other Moms have shared to try to make things as low stress as possible. So far he’s left notes, TP’d the Christmas Tree, turned the milk green and told Maggie how proud he and Santa are that she’s listening to Mommy and Daddy and eating her dinner.

7.) Photography + Simple Memory Keeping:

I was an avid scrapbooker BEFORE I had Maggie, and while I had great intentions of making an amazing baby book and recording all her milestones and first year memories, I soon realized that my time and energy bank accounts didn’t have the funding for such an undertaking. Thankfully now, I have an iPhone with an amazing camera and a bunch of apps to make memory keeping almost effortless. Instagram is great for social sharing, PostalPix will print your photos and mail them to you, and I am starting to use the Project Life by Becky Higgins system of pocket pages and inserts to work on a scrapbook that’s modern and Mommy friendly.

8.) Reading:

Maggie loves books even more than Tea Parties AND yogurt combined. I recently introduced Maggie to the wonder and joy of the library, and my Mom takes her a couple times a week to trade out her books for new favorites. Mo Willems books are a big hit in our house, and so is Olivia, and she loves her “Frosty the Snowman” book. I brought Maggie this M. Sasek book from my NYC trip, and can’t wait to see what other books Santa will be bringing her this year.

9.) The Big Girl Bedroom:

We found a great inspiration photo on Pinterest, and my Dad is coming to build her new bed. We’re so excited to decorate and paint and fill her new room with big girl fun!

This is the age where Maggie is determined to do everything herself, but still wants to crawl into my lap to snuggle, and the light left on at bedtime. It seems like yesterday she was still just a baby…because she was! She is definitely dipping her toes into the pool of independence, and loves being a “big girl” and pretending to be the “Mommy,” so she can make the rules. We, however, are not quite as ready as she is. And I know that’s something all parents can understand.
